Harpenden Dolphins C.C. v Broxbourne III on Sat 01 Sep 2012 at 12:30
Harpenden Dolphins C.C. Won by 2 wickets
Match report
On Saturday the 1st September, the Dolphins were up against Broxbourne III. It was a must win game for both sides, Broxbourne chasing promotion while Dolphins fighting for survival.
A celebrity appearance from Schalk and a hungover Lee meant the Dolphins were ready to fly.
On the usual Dolphins track with cloud cover there was only one option and that was to bowl....so duly Tom obliged and we put the opposition in.
An earlier than normal start meant we began with 9 men....although that didn’t seem to make a difference. Schalk and Grandpa Holdy kicked off. The opening pair went without trouble, murmurs amongst the fielders that the opposition had reversed the order. Anyway they were kept under wraps with some fine line and length bowling. At 10 for 2 and 60 for 5...we were in control - although their number 3, young lad began to take the game away from us with some exquisite shots all over the park.
However some tactical field placing from Tom while Lee was bowling saw the major breakthrough with the number 3 clipping off his legs straight into Schalk's hands.
Some lower order swinging and a 14 year old playing some steady shots created a better platform of 80 odd for 6 at drinks. Then some wind in the air which was mistaken for swearing raised the temperature of the game.
The opposition reached 100 for 9 and we thought early tea from The Gulls. However, their number 11 came in after flirtings with their 1st team and decided to swing and take us apart. From looking in control we were chasing 175 on a pitch which was very helpful to bowlers.
The tea was lovely, smoked salmon bagels, awesome cakes – thank you The Gulls.
The tea was so good that the Dolphins started with a bang....an imploding bang that is. Their opening spinners were very good....the off spinner in particular who happened to be also their number 3.... 2 down with barely 8 on the board. Ant trying a Usain Bolt and kept on running....3 down....bonza picking out the one fielder on the boundary – 4 down...then their off spinner decided it was time to go to a party – game was in the bag so he disappeared leaving them with 10 men. Didnt get much better with Chris out 11 for 5 and were staring down the barrel.
What happened next I will never forget....
Tom played some solid shots and hanged in...amit nurdling....and Andy smacking....60 odd for 8. That brought a 1 legged Schalk to the crease with a Hungover Lee. To say the ball went everywhere it did...Most of us had already packed up and ready to go home...However our 2 star men thought differently....they couldn’t run for singles so decided to do it in boundaries...a rowdy field went quiet...we were still 2nd favourites...with 30 odd needed off 4 overs...
One big over from Schalk - I think 20 odd runs off it....and an surprising victory for a team looking dead and buried.....Schalk and Lee performed fantastically....and duly necked a funnel of beer each. Lee getting back on it.
This victory was massively important as we survived relegation thanks to it.
