Harpenden Dolphins C.C. Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Harpenden Dolphins CC –v- Pirton CC

With the Dolphins sporting an array of “brand new” and “legend” status talent we arrived at the village or Pirton off the back of a win and a tie (50 points from a possible 60), hoping to finally break free from the tightening grasp of possible relegation... However, as the glorious weather continued all around Hertfordshire the match on Saturday, was set to be overcast with the very rare sunny spell

The toss was lost and we were invited to bat on what looked like a good track, Tom Roche and Mike Lacey opening. Pirton struck early with Tom feathering one to their keeper in the second over, it was 2 for 1, with Tom not troubling the scorer. Richard Foord took to the crease but in the 4th over Pirton struck again, Richard, clean bowled and heading back to the pavilion again saving the scorers pen... dolphins were 2 for 2... Amit Mathur joined Mike at the crease and the feeling of a steady partnership blossomed.

It was unfortunately short-lived, by the end of the 6th over Amit had succumbed to their pace attack and was bowled while on 5 runs, leaving us on 8 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Our “brand new talent”, Alex Horne, strode out to the crease with the words of Usain ringing in his ears “its not always like this”... Alex, while sticking with Mike for a further 5 over’s, was given out LBW in the 11th over having scored 1 and avoiding the dreaded yellow hat on the first appearance... Jason Guest took to the field with purpose joining Mike who was on 15.

Jason was able to help the scoreboard click over with an additional 10 runs with some usual strong shots, only to succumb to their pace bowlers, clean bowled. Stato now on 21 was joined by Ollie Lacey.

But in rapid fire, Mike was caught behind for 23, then soon followed Ron Giovanni, bowled for 0, Graham Downes, given LBW for 0.

The hatrick was on but Neil Bolt taking to the crease, knowing his skill set and summoning up the knowledge from all the hours in nets, skilfully, deftly... parked the bus in front of the stumps... halting the hatrick ball and stopping the collapse within a collapse at 44 runs for 8 wickets...

Neil joined Ollie and set about stopping and even reversing the current fortunes on the pitch..., steadily posting the best inning partnership of 19 and moving on to what looked like likely to be a good score, only for Ollie to be caught at midwicket for 15, Dolphins were left on 63 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Then from the annuls of time stepped a Dolphin legend, Richard Gilbert, taking back to the pitch at our time of need, leading the way, was he to hopefully guide Dolphins back into the light and resurrect the innings? There was hope...

Neil & Ritchie dug in so deep it was like a scene from WW1, amassing a further 8 runs taking the score to 71, with Neil breaking all personal league batting records. Usain batted for 10 overs, facing 38 balls hitting 6 runs which included his first 4 for the Dolphins... unfortunately being bowled by one of their openers.. While Ritchie faced 20 balls and hitting 1 run getting him straight back onto the scorecard and keeping up his averages... It was time for tea... or so some thought... Dolphins finishing on 71 all out.

After a brief discussion it was agreed that we would return to the field to get a quick fire 10 overs in before tea... Ron opened the bowling down the slope and was unlucky not to take wickets in the first couple of overs, along with Tom and Jason from the other end we applied the pressure but were unable to make the break through, Ron finishing on 5 overs, one maiden for 17 runs, Tom with 3 overs, 2 maidens for the loss of 2 runs and Jason who bowled 2 overs giving away just 4 runs.

We broke for tea, knowing that we had kept the score tight but just not taken the wickets, we were still hopeful...

With youth on our side the second session began with Ollie Lacy and Alex Horn taking up the reins of the bowling attack, both showing great skill and tenacity the opening wicket was taken by Ollie, T. Laskowski, LBW for 12 runs. Ollie continued to push hard but finished the day on 6 overs, 1 wicket, 2 maidens, for 12 runs. Alex showing the potential we need coming through finished on 4 overs, 1 maiden for 13 runs.

It was left to the more experienced members of the bowling attack to try and pull through the miracle that was required on the day, with Amit and Graham spinning and turning the ball chances came again but luck was not on our side, the highlight of Amit taking the second scalp of the day, R. Thumbed LBW for 15, was always going to be overshadowed by the inevitable chase down and passing of the Dolphins meagre score.

The sky clouds over...
