Harpenden Dolphins C.C. v London Colney II on Sat 03 May 2014 at 13:00
Harpenden Dolphins C.C. Won by 39 runs
Match report
After a long winter, the Dolphins finally had their first game of the 2014 season at home to London Colney II. Skipper Tom lost the toss and was asked to bat. Ant Rayner and Mike Lacey opened the batting and within 5 overs there was already the first casualty. The opposition wicket keeper went to stop some wayward bowling down leg side (whilst standing up) and took a ball to the face. After the magic sponge came out (there was no Mrs Lacey to deal with the incident). Thankfully, he was ok to continue. Dolphins put on 32 for the first wicket, as Mike fell for 5. What happened next is somewhat a tradition at Dolphins. Dolphins went from 32-0 to 42-5 and struggling to put runs on the board, with Chris Rayner showing the new boys (Billy Giovanni and Adam Driscoll) how to fall for a duck, whilst Chris’ brother fell for 21. Will Gull and Tom Roche managed to steady the ship, with Will falling for a commendable 4, who supported Tom well. Graham Barrett went one further as it took him 30 balls to get off the mark. However, the wickets tumbled quickly after that as the Dolphins reached 82 all out.
After the interval of a very good tea provided by Karen and Liz, the new looking youthful side took to the field and, after a pre-field huddle where Tom produced a motivational speech, Ollie Lacey and Adam Driscoll opened the bowling, both of them bowling very neatly. Ollie picked up his first wicket of the season without the opener troubling the scorer. 0 for 1. This very quickly turned to 1 for 2 as Ollie picked up another. Adam joined the party, as wickets started to fall regularly. Ollie finished his spell with 7-2-12-2, with Tom replacing him in the attack. Wickets continue to fell, restricting the opposition to 26 for 9 (yes you read that right!). Adam picked up 5 wickets for just 8 runs off 11 overs, whilst Tom picked up 2 from the other end. Ron picked up the last wicket as London Colney were all out for 43.
Dolphins claimed their first win of the season bagging 30 points, winning by 39 runs. Could this be a new beginning for the Dolphins?
