Harpenden Dolphins C.C. v Cockfosters III on Sat 13 Jul 2013 at 1pm
Match was Tied

Match report Harpenden Dolphins welcomed Cockfosters III to a scorching Rothampstead park on Saturday. Both teams are near each other on points in the league so a win for the dolphins would go a long way to securing safety. To everyone’s relief Tom won the toss and elected to bat. After scoring more than 250 last week the team, supposedly boasting a ‘strong batting line up’, hoped to come close to the same score again…

Five runs came from a very promising first over, however optimism was short lived. Mice Lacey was caught for a single and Tom Roche was bowled soon after by a delivery described by bowler as ‘the best I bowled all day’. This brought Roland James and Richard Foord to the crease. Richard hit a couple of fours before lofting a dolly into the covers. Roland played some nice shots off the back foot but was eventually out for 25. Soon after, Paul Bonney was dubiously judged to have nicked behind. By now Amit and Graham were at the crease hoping to steady the ship. However, Graham was out LBW for a duck, whilst Amit scored one run before gloving behind. Jason Guest walked out sporting the duck cap and quickly removed all possibility of wearing it next week with a quick four, although he was back in the hutch soon after, holing out to mid off. Ant Rayner managed the inexplicable feat of being bowled behind his legs by a ball that hit middle stump. The result of all this chaos was that the dolphins were teetering on a very disrespectful 77-9 when Ollie Lacey was brought the crease with Lee Lambert. With some watchful cricket and fine boundaries the duo hauled the dolphins to respectability, putting on 39 for the last wicket. Lee lambert top scoredwith 34 and Ollie Lacey finished on 4* off many, many balls. The dolphins finished on a competitive yet disappointing 116 all out.

In the previous match Rickmansworth described the dolphin’s catching as ‘test match standard’. We knew we had to be up to the same standard this week to have any chance of winning. Tom got a wicket with his second ball, the opener’s edge drawing a smart catch at slip. The other opener was removed shortly after with a good catch at gully from Ant Rayner. It was only a matter of time before the dolphin’s unnatural tenacity in the field came to an end. The Cockfosters number three batsman was dropped about 4 times before eventually being bowled by a very impressive spell from Ollie Lacy which drew three quick wickets. At the other end Amit bamboozled the middle order with his off spin and was unlucky to end the match with only one wicket. Despite the missed chances both spells were extremely tight and the dolphins sensing an unlikely victory could be on the cards with the opposition tail filled with youngsters. With four wickets to take Tom elected to take the new ball with Lee Lambert and Ollie Lacy bowling from their respective ends. The new cherry worked its magic with quick wickets, including an impressive, if slightly marginal, run out. Despite this good effort Cockfosters battled their way to 114-9 need a handful of runs from many overs. Lee Lambert stepped up confidently to bowl, throwing down two no ball beamers to tie the scores. Cockfosters needed one run to win. Happily for the Dolphins, rather than working an easy single off his pads, or blocking and waiting for another no ball, the rash young batsman attempted to advance down the track to smash the winning runs over the bowlers head. He proceeded, in fact, to sky the ball strait into the air; Lambert gleefully taking the catch, breaking down in an emotional heap of despair, relief, nerves, and happiness. Meanwhile the Cockfosters batman threw his bat out to long on and trudged back to the pavilion trying his best not to make eye contact with any of his team mates. Match tied. 20 points to the dolphins.
