On a day where the pitch was even greener than usual following Friday night’s heavy rain it was always going to be a good toss to win for the return fixture against Welwyn Garden City, and win it Tom did and immediately elected to field.
As per Adam and Ollie opened with their immaculate areas and during a strange passage of play it took the oppo until the 8th over to register a run on the board, leaving them one for one after Adam had removed the number two bat second ball.
Ollie was replaced by Tom after a tight spell and the skipper bowled very well, eventually claiming a six-for having been supported by some terrific fielding, most notably a worldie slip catch by Andy and two by the ever ice-cool Zippy.
Ollie returned to remove the number 11 and this saw the end of the Welwyn innings with the score on 54.
Lee and Duncan immediately set about our reply but only Duncan (12) of the top 5 batsman was able to pass double figures as we left ourselves 15-4. Fortunately our good president Zippy was in at six and came to the rescue, scoring a stylish 20 to steer Dolphins close to victory. Zippy was ably supported by Andy (11) and needing 2 to win with 4 wickets in hand it appeared as though nothing could go wrong for Dolphins. That however would have been boring and certainly wouldn’t be ‘the Dolphins’ way’. Instead we lost 3 wickets for 0 runs, leaving it down to Ollie and Neil to scamper through for a 2 after several tense overs of dot balls.
30 points for the Dolphins but my word we made it hard work for ourselves.
