Match report The 2015 season feels like it finished just 17 minutes ago, but yet Dolphins found themselves back at Rothamsted Park for their annual pre-season friendly against Bamville to kick off the new season. The fixture certainly had an April feel to it, as Dolphins donned as many jumpers as they could find. New captain Bonney won the toss, and on an unsurprisingly green and wet wicket opted to bowl.

Everyone was allowed to showcase the training that they had put in over the winter. Ollie and Ron opened the bowling against some big hitters. Ollie kept it tight, whilst Ron used his experience to entice the opposition into false shots, and see them ballooning the ball up into the air with fielders waiting to claim underneath. Ron, and subsequently Tom were bowling as if it was the end of July with their impressive accuracy. It was a familiar sight therefore to see them rattle through the wickets, picking up 7 between them. Well done boys.

Flurries of wickets enabled everyone to play a part. Special note should go to Ant Rayner, who managed to avoid bowling down leg side by using a front arm; something that hadn’t been used at all in the winter nets. He bowled superbly without reward. Others chipped in with wickets to see Bamville all out for 86, a respectable score considering the conditions.

The Dolphin teas are somewhat of a trademark within Harpenden, and the bar was set high. A selection of cakes and sandwiches were fantastic, much to the delight of everyone. Thank you to Eric and Chris Bonney for stepping in to help us out, it is greatly appreciated.

The Dolphins innings started well with Ant and Tony (stand in for the day) opening up. However, as soon as a Fahim came on to bowl, the scenario changed. It was great to have the second generation of Finch join us in the ranks, with George walking in at 3. Unfortunately, he didn’t trouble the scorer, but no doubt will come good in the coming weeks. A tradition Dolphins collapse was on the cards, but Tom stepped in to steady the ship, and looked good for his 19. Dolphins were etching close to the target, but Lee needed support from the tail to see it through. However, it failed to wag as both Ron and Ollie got out for ducks, playing big shots to try and bring down the run rate.

It came down to the final over, with Dolphins needing an unlikely 13 runs to win. However, the finish looked in sight when Lee cleared the boundary first ball. However, he failed to connect with many others, and only a couple of 2s and a wide meant a boundary was required off the last ball. Alas, only 2 runs were scored, meaning Dolphins fell 1 run short. For the first game of the season, it was a great to get back out there, and some positive signs for the upcoming season.
