Match report The previous week, April saw record breaking temperatures and Harpenden bathed in sunshine. It was therefore inevitable that the curtain raiser for the 2019 season would see temperatures barely touching double figures and keen winds between 40-50mph. This was only to be compounded by being unable to access the pavilion, leaving some questioning whether the fixture should even be fulfilled. The game was well under way before access was granted by the park ranger.

After persuading the team to change in the open and winning the toss, Dolphins battled the elements in the field with all 11 players donning their new baggy caps. Thank you George for organising. Lacey and Driscoll reunited in their opening partnership once again, with Lacey picking up a wicket maiden in the first over of the season. After a tidy start, the youth was replaced with experience in the Ron/Tom combo. Last season Driscoll snaffled just about anything that came his way in the slip cordon, and gratefully received a knick off of Tom. With no change to the weather in sight, all fielders were given the opportunity to bowl. Wickets for Finch, Lambert, Giovanni Jnr and Godfrey-Evans. At the end of 35 overs Bamville had posted a respectable 162.

In return, Roche Jnr and MGE opened up, but were quickly replaced by Finch and Lewis. Both were patient, waiting to punish short balls. Lewis was unfortunate to see the ball ricochet off both pads before the ball trickled onto the stumps. Finch missed out on a deserved half-century after chipping one back to the bowler.As the field started to spread, Dolphins started to rotate the strike well, with the exception of one delivery where miscommunication saw Lambert run out for 36. It was down to the Giovanni's to win the game for Dolphins, needing 7 runs to win off the final over. This came down to 2 off the last ball. Ron swiped and missed, but after a missed shy from the keeper, the pair scampered through for a single to tie a game.

Whilst not ideal conditions to start the 2019 season, the cobwebs were well and truly blown away and hopefully won't have dampened the enthusiasm for the upcoming season
